Orlando, a U.S. Navy veteran, served honorably as a Petty Officer Third Class and Boatswain’s Mate aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN-73). During his service, he held significant responsibility, including operating and maneuvering one of the Navy’s most complex vessels. Like many veterans transitioning back to civilian life, Orlando faced challenges after service that required both perseverance and support.
After recently leaving a transitional residence, Orlando took an important step forward by securing his own apartment. To support himself, he works as a delivery driver and subcontractor through Amazon Flex and Walmart Spark, relying heavily on his vehicle to earn income. Despite working consistently, fluctuating gig income made it difficult for him to keep up with rent, utilities, and other essential expenses.
When Orlando’s vehicle began experiencing serious mechanical issues, including a failing clutch and multiple cooling and hose leaks, his ability to work and remain housed was put at risk. Without reliable transportation, he faced the very real possibility of falling behind on bills, incurring late fees, or even facing eviction.
Through a coordinated effort between Honor Charity, Primavera Foundation – Project Action for Veterans, Orlando received a grant to cover critical car repairs. This collaboration ensured that assistance was timely, targeted, and aligned with Orlando’s broader path toward long-term stability.
At the same time, Orlando has been actively working with Endeavors to secure permanent employment and pursue a technical certificate in information technology. With his vehicle repaired, Orlando can continue working, meet his monthly obligations, and focus on building a sustainable future rather than managing crisis after crisis.
“This support helped me worry less about falling behind,” Orlando shared. “It allowed me to keep working, pay my bills on time, and avoid eviction, utility shutoffs, and food insecurity.”
Orlando’s story is a powerful example of how collaboration between community partners and targeted financial assistance can create real, lasting impact. By addressing a critical gap at the right moment, Honor Charity and its partners helped a veteran remain housed, employed, and moving forward with confidence.
