Annual Memorial

Hundreds of people living on the Tucson streets die every year. They die of cold, of ill-health, or they are murdered in unprovoked hate crimes. Their deaths go unmarked by society. Many local organizations work to give voice to those who live on the street and in our desert washes. On National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day local organizations pause to honor and remember the lives of those who passed away on the streets.

On December 19, 2008 The Primavera Foundation, other local organizations, interested people and individuals experiencing homelessness will participate in an interfaith remembrance service. The service is open to the public and will be held at the west end of Evergreen Cemetery at the County Plot from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The lives of persons who died without homes will be honored through music, speeches from elected officials and readings from relatives and acquaintances of those who have died.

Every year local and national groups commemorate National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember those who paid the ultimate price for our nation's failure to end this social problem.  “It is a tragedy that so many of our fellow Tucsonans lack access to safe, affordable housing and health care,” said Peggy Hutchison, Executive Director of The Primavera Foundation. “Housing, health care and physical safety is a human right. If Tucson makes affordable housing, living wages, and accessible health care a top priority, we will not have to hold homeless memorial services. We must continue to work steadfastly toward providing adequate support to fellow citizens in need especially during this economic crisis”.

This year, Tucson joins over 125 cities across the nation that are sponsoring events, including candlelight marches and vigils, graveside services, plays and other performances, and special religious services.
